My first blog!

Hello All,

It was very nice meeting everyone yesterday. I was struggling to come up with a "problem" in class but it came to me on the drive home. I think it is unfair that Mason has three conferral dates but only one ceremony. What about the students who graduate at the end of the Fall term, especially the international students who's student visas expire. Shouldn't they be able to walk after they complete their degrees instead of waiting six months till the ceremony in May? Mason is one of the largest universities in VA but one of the few that still only have one commencement ceremony. What do you all think?

I have worked here two years and didn't realize that. Sounds like a good topic with a lot of different view points. Kathy

Really??!! I didn't know that. That sounds squirrelly to me...and probably a great topic to cover! I wonder what the "history" is for that one.

I agree. With the number of degrees and three conferral dates, it's a little naive to think that all graduating students can be on campus for that one date - graduation day. International students, as you pointed out, are especially susceptible to being excluded.

However, I believe that many schools allow students to “walk” prior to conferral - at least they do for the MAIS. GMU would probably use this as an argument against multiple graduation ceremonies.

Sounds like an interesting topic and now that I’m thinking about it – having more than one commencement ceremony (winter and spring) might reduce some of the craziness around having everything at once.

I agree that the university should begin hosting two graduation- 1 in the spring and 1 in the fall. You are even able to walk in the spring graduation even if you have not fully completed your degree and are taking summer class.

Shouldn't these students have to complete all requirements before walking across the stage. Do you think that this is the same at other state universities?
