Vicious Cycle

It is kind of a catch 22 - In addition to the research piece, I've heard criticism toward universities for providing a spectrum of amenities and services that do not seem directly related to academics so they can stay competitive and attract people/money.  Some might justify it by saying that it will bring in more money that can be put toward the mission??

I think attracting students by offering nice amenities and a social atmostpher is something that is important for universities. Probally something the admissions office likes to advertise during rucruiting periods.

I agree that universites are spending more money on things like dorms and other amenitiese to attrack students. Just look at the new student housing, dining facilities and workout facilities that GMU is building. I also think it is sad change in societal views. Years ago it was a great priveldge to be able to get a good education at a university. Now it's about how many extras can I get for my money.

There has to be a balance between top notch education and quality of life. You want a pleasant and safe learning environment but not with the appearance of having a "country club" attitude.
